Spirulina – Five good reasons for taking it daily


Spirulina Alga is assigned to the Superfood category. This is also quite legitimate, because this superlative describes foods that contain a veritable cornucopia of nutrients and vital substances have innumerable enzymes, have a high chlorophyll content and overall show a basic effect on the organism. All these requirements are fulfilled by the spirulina algae, so that their versatile positive effects on the body can already be guessed. We would like to introduce you to some of them, so that you too may soon become part of the Spirulina fanbase.

1. Spirulina works against infections

Spirulina, with dog protein powder, is one of the most protein-rich foods. Among the proteins are also those which have been scientifically proven to significantly increase the production of disease fighting killer cells, helper cells and antibodies.

2. Spirulina protects against viruses

The potassium salts contained in the Spirulina prevent the penetration of viruses into the cell, as they stick to the salts when docked to the cell wall. In this hopeless situation, they are an easy prey for the defense cells of the immune system. This is confirmed by various studies. The research team was able to prove that Spirulina protects the cells in this way against herpes simplex viruses , cytomegalo viruses, influenza A viruses, mumps viruses and measles viruses.

In addition, several older studies suggest that Spirulina may even protect against the AIDS virus (HIV). These studies are also consistent with a recent 2012 study in which spirulina was tested on eleven HIV patients over a three-month period.

The quality of life of study participants improved during ingestion of algae and the number of HI viruses in the blood remained stable.

3. Spirulina can reduce allergic reactions

A study published in the journal Journal of Medicinal Food in 2005 showed that spirulina was able to prevent allergic reactions in people suffering from rhinitis (inflammation of the nasal septum).

Also in the treatment of hay fever, skin allergies and other forms of allergy has been found that spirulina contains certain substances that inhibit the emission of histamine.

4. Spirulina improves blood levels

A study of patients with type 2 diabetes showed that already with a daily intake of only 2 g Spirulina, the concentration of blood sugar could be lowered. At the same time, the total cholesterol value decreased, the LDL level went down and the HDL level increased.

Researchers also found that the blue-green pigment of spirulina algae – the so-called phycocyanin – can regulate blood sugar levels.

Phycocyanin is also said to protect against high blood pressure and increase adiponectin levels. Adiponectin is involved in the regulation of hunger. High adiponectin levels make us less hungry.

5. Spirulina has an anti-inflammatory effect

Of course, phycocyanin is not just the colorant of spirulina – quite the contrary. Phycocyanin, because of its strong antioxidant properties, occupies a high position on the evaluation list of the active ingredients in spirulina.

Together with the beta-carotene, which is also contained in spirulina, and some other radical scavengers (vitamins C and E, selenium), it inhibits the development of oxidation processes that damage the cell walls.

Damaged cell walls trigger inflammatory processes that can spread throughout the body. In this context it is important to know that the development of many diseases is based on these previous inflammatory processes.
